Biography

Kathy learned to make her first basket through Bridgeport (MI) Community Education in 1984.  She quickly developed her basketmaking skills and soon began teaching from her home and to community organizations.  She also sold her baskets and other crafts at shows.

As her teaching experience continued to develop, Kathy began teaching at state conventions.  She first taught at the Association of Michigan Basketmakers convention in 1987 and continues to teach there annually.  She has also served on the AMB board and has contributed to many convention committees.  Kathy co-coordinated the 1994, 2000, 2003, and 2008 AMB conventions.  She is currently the past president of the AMB.

In addition to teaching at AMB conventions, Kathy has taught for several years at the annual conventions of both the Indiana Basketmakers Association and the North Carolina Basketmakers Association.  She has also taught at Winter Weave in Ohio, Crossroads Getaway in Michigan, AMB Spring Event, the Land of Lincoln guild in Illinois, the Lake Country Basket Fest in Wisconsin, the Northeast Basketmakers Seminar in Connecticut, Reed Treat in Indiana, and the Bluegrass Area Basketmakers Seminar in Kentucky.  More recently, Kathy has taught at Guilders Weave in Virginia, Weavers' Summit in Indiana, and the Midsummer Weave in Dayton, Ohio.  She hopes that her students not only leave class with a basket they really like, but also with lots of tips and techniques that can be used in any basketmaking project.

Kathy retired from her at-home daycare business after 25 years.  She and her husband also provided a foster home for newborn infants during this time.  Kathy and her family cared for 57 infants over 24 years.

Kathy has a B.S. in Home Economics Education from Ohio University.
